Transformation Tuesday: How to Eliminate and Prevent Trash Can Summer Stink

Summertime temperatures are soaring across the country and the hotter it gets outside, the faster your trash can is starting to stink. Even though you can’t control the temperature outside, you can take steps to stop your garbage from smelling like the dump.

Today’s topic is how to eliminate and prevent those nasty summertime trash can smells.

Here are 4 easy tips on how to banish and prevent garbage odors:

1.  Use heavy duty garbage bags

There are some experiences we’re perfectly happy avoiding altogether—such as ripped or leaking garbage bags. If you’ve experienced it once, that was one time too many. We recommend always using heavy duty, extra heavy duty, or extra-extra heavy duty trash can liners.

2.  Double-bag

Keep both the garbage and its smell contained by double-bagging. More layers between trash and the outside world mean less gross smells and a lower chance of unwanted leaks.

3.  Line the bottom of the garbage can

Heat and humidity make everyone and everything sweat—including the inside of trash bins. Put a layer of paper towels or wipers at the bottom of your garbage can to absorb moisture and catch any unexpected trash bag leaks. For your kitchen canister, scented dryer sheets make a great bottom liner that both neutralizes bad smells and gives off a clean, fresh scent.

4.  Clean your garbage can

It might sound silly, but yes you do need to clean your trash can itself. If your trash can itself isn’t clean, it’s going to smell bad even if you are taking some of our previous recommendations, such as using heavy duty bags and double-bagging. Make your job easier by using all purpose cleaners and deodorizers like Suma Dumpster Fresh or Febreze to get your garbage can clean and prevent odors from returning.

We hope you’ll follow these easy tips and say goodbye to nasty trash can stink for good!
