DIY Halloween Decorations on a Budget

Ever think to yourself that your lawn just doesn’t look complete without a giant spider on it? Well, maybe not often, but during Halloween season, this creepy craft is the perfect terrifying touch for your front yard or porch. What will you need to make it? First, get some garbage bags, black and heavy-duty are best, and grab some stuffing (leaves, old newspaper, and/or tissue paper work well). Stuff one trash bag and tie it off for the body. Then, to create the legs, fill eight additional garbage bags about a fourth of the way, keeping all of the stuffing in a straight section along the length of the bag. Roll the filled part of the bag so that the empty part wraps around it, and tie the leg off in the center to both secure it and create a “knee.” You can attach the legs to the spider body with a glue gun or stapler, and then glue on two cut-off ends of red mini party cups for the eyes. Voila—a spooky, giant spider!

Worried about the weather affecting your decorations? Making a sturdy Halloween garland that can stand up to the wind and rain that may happen between now and Halloween is as easy as ordering some plastic plates in a variety of festive colors! Trace out the letters on each plate that you want to cut out (spell out a simple “Happy Halloween” or “Trick-or-Treat!”) then, using either scissors or a sharp X-Acto knife, cut out the letters from each plate. Use a hole punch at the top of each letter, string them together, and you’ve got a Halloween garland that is waterproof and ready to hang above your front door!

Looking to make your house the scariest on the block? Easily done! Using a few paper towel rolls, trace and cut out different shapes of eyes. Then, insert a glow stick into the open end of the paper towel roll, securing it with a bit of tape if you need to, and watch as those cut-out eyes become creepy, glowing peepers! You can place these glowing eyes in the bushes and shrubs by your porch on Halloween night and make trick-or-treaters do a double-take as they come up for their candy!
